As a companion to the HC4u's UK Reporter I thought you might appreciate some of my holiday photographs; it will give you a little insight to this country across the Pond.

Here is the first - it is one of me standing on one of the staircases leading into the Trafford Centre, a very large shopping complex in Manchester, a city in the North of England.

Incidentally, this was taken the day before I had my heart attack back in June 2009 - I have lost a lot of weight since then.

Thanks for the pic!

What a marvelous staircase. Marble? Or a fascimile?

You look healthy there. Too bad heart disease never shows up in how we look. Praying you are doing well in that regard, Pen.

Hope you have more pics of your vacation.

In answer to your questions - it is genuine marble; there are six entrances to the shopping complex - you are right about the heart disease not showing up in how we look; it came as a great shock, I can tell you - I am doing very well now, thank you, and feeling very much better with the less weight - and yes, I have plenty more pics; if you all are heppy about it, I will keep posting them for several months to come; let me know.

I'll post another one a little later on today; I had planned only to send one a day, not two, but I will make an exception for this first day.

Thanks for your interest.

This is the Grand Hotel in Scarborough, an old seaside town on the east coast of northern England - it is where I stay when on holiday there.

The hotel was built in the shape of a 'V' to honour Queen Victoria; it has 365 bedrooms [one for each day of the year]; seven lifts (you would call them elevators) [one for each day in a week]; there are 12 floors [one for each month in a year]; there are four domes [one for each season of the year: Spring, Summer, Autumn (Fall) and Winter] and there are 24 public rooms(ballrooms, dining rooms, conference rooms, lounges, etc) [one for each hour in a day].

Anything for you, Ruth Ann - here is an extra photograph for today of the entrance hall of the Grand Hotel at Scarborough - this is what you see when you enter the main door - hope you like it.

Hello, Olivet, in answer to your question, I was in France and Belgium back in February, but posting this picture is cheating a little in a string entitled Holiday Pix from the UK - however, just to please you here is one of many pictures I took in Brugge in Belgium - I have many more from both Belgium and France, including views from the Cross Channel Ferry [if you really want to see them, over a period of time, not immediately.]

Now here is today's picture - the other two were bonus pix to please Ruth Ann and Olivet!

Norwich Castle in (where else?) Norwich, a beautiful city in East Anglia in Central Eastern England. As a matter of interest I was in ministry in Norwich, my last church before moving to Bournemouth.

As you may (or may not) know, the UK is made up of four separate countries - England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. I have never been to NI, but have had several holidays in the other three. Just to prove a point, and to make Ruth Ann happy, because she wants the UK pictures to "keep coming", I'll post yet another one today, this time from Wales. It is one of the mountain railway up Mount Snowden, the highest point in the whole of the UK. It is a rack railway, and if you would like me to show you some pictures of the actual track for interest sake, please let me know. HAPPY VIEWING!

I didn't think there were any mountains in England.  Shocked

And I don't know what a stack railroad is. Yes, please, Pen. Show the track.

Did you ride on the train?

Hi Ruth Ann

Before posting any more pix let me answer your questions. Yes, there are many mountains in England - the Mendips, the Pennines, the Peak District, the Lake District, to name but a few.

It is a rack railway, not a stack railroad[way], so I'll illustrate it with todays pictures in the next post.

Yes, I did ride on the train, but only a little over two thirds of the way up the mountain; the final stretch of track up to the summit was closed for maintainance.

Go to the next post for illustrations.

UP MOUNT SNOWDON, NORTH WALES, UK!

The first picture is a view of the railway just over two thirds up the mountain showing the track in situ.

The second picture is a closeup of the track showing the "rack" in the centre; a cog wheel on the engine grips this "rack" all the way up and down the mountain. Incidentally, there is only one engine and one carriage in each train, and they are not attached because the engine pushes the train up the mountain and acts as a brake back down the mountain.

The third picture is a long shot of the mountain train moving back down the mountain - it is about half way down.

Wonderful!!! Thanks for the correction. Sometimes wonder if I don't have a learning disability. I had a strange way of learning math too.

If you don't mind, I thought I might show you Pittsburgh's cable cars. They are the way people get up and down the mountain to the city and home again.

Here are pics.
(then I will quit my pics of our city in this thread).

Thanks, Ruth Ann

I don't mind you "highjacking" my thread with non-UK pictures, especially when they are such good pix. I notice, however, that they are not "rack" propelled but cable driven - there's a difference.

Incidentally, we have three sets of cable cars here in Bournemouth to transport people to and from the beach.

What would you like to see next from the UK?

Just a few thumbnail pictures of the different cliff lifts in Bournemouth to illustrate the statement made in my previous post - this just for your interest and information.
