This is so sad.

It sounds as if Mr. Sanger is declining in health. Who let him get the bedsore?Huh

That is nutrition and nursing care.

Such horrible situations we put ourselves into. Even if the man had left directions to not keep him alive with extraordinary means such as a feeding tube, people change their minds.

My mom in law had a heart attack in her late 50's. She had open heart bypass surgery. Then she told me:  "Ruth Ann, don't ever let them do that to me again. I really want to die before I go through that again. Please." I asked her to put it in writing. She never did.

Then she had more coronary occlusions. She went to her cardiologist and had angioplasty. She said she changed her mind. She would have anything to keep alive...

You just don't know how you would decide until the time comes.

But this man might just die on his own even with the feeding tube. The court case is a shame.

No court should deal with these situations. When family members this close disagree, as happened in my hospitals, life won. The person was kept alive.

I don't believe feeding tubes should be classified as extraordinary means, no more than hand feeding is.  Exatrordinary means are machines that keep the heart pumping .

Legally, medically, tube feedings are seen as extraordinary in most states.

But does it matter? If one person disagrees in with holding treatment or not, just one, treatment should be given. Unless the person has said he doesn't want any more treatment.

We should be on the side of life.

When we tread this path we are moving to euthanasia of the physically and mentally handicapped/challenged. We've lost our humanity.
