The Doomsday Profit-eers
All this talk about the end of the world is pretty grim, but some people are milking the apocalypse hype for what it's worth.
Mexico, in particular, is cashing in on the Mayan prophesy, and expects to see around 52 million visitors to visit its Mayan ruins between now and December 2012.
Then there's all those 2012 Survival Guides – similar in many ways to the Zombie Survival Guide, these books are meant to keep the reader safe after the world goes down in flames. Opportunists are selling stylish 2012 doomsday T-shirts all over the internet. Careers are being launched, too: a writer and businessman named Lawrence E. Joseph made his fame writing about terrible events to come in 2012, providing what he dubs the hard 'science' behind the big Hollywood action thriller 2012. For hardcore "survivalist" believers, a group called Vivos is selling space in underground bunkers -- reportedly worth millions -- for just $50,000 per person.
All of the above theories should be taken with a grain of salt. The world may still be here after December 2012, so it's probably wise not to blow off parking tickets or date people you never said you would unless they were the last people on earth (they probably won't be).
